What Causes Vaginal Darkening?

Vaginal darkening, a type of hyperpigmentation, primarily occurs due to increased production and accumulation of melanin in the area. There are several common causes for the increase in melanin production. These causes include:

  • Friction can lead to skin darkening not only in the vaginal area but also anywhere on the body. However, it is a common cause of darkening in the genital area. Friction causes hyperactivity in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin pigment. As a result, more melanin is produced and accumulates in the area. Friction can have various causes, including wearing tight underwear or clothing, exercising, and running.
  • Another cause of vaginal darkening is shaving. Because the genital area is very sensitive, shaving can cause an inflammatory response. Hyperpigmentation can occur after the inflammation. Additionally, the chemicals in shaving creams or lotions can intensify the skin's reaction.
  • Hormonal changes are another factor that contributes to vaginal darkening. While the entire body has melanin-producing melanocytes, the melanocytes around the vagina are more sensitive to hormones. When there is an increase in estrogen and progesterone levels in the body, melanin production can accelerate. These changes can occur during pregnancy or menopause. Additionally, many birth control medications can cause such changes.
  • Aging is another factor in genital darkening. As one ages, skin tone changes.

What is Vaginal Whitening?

Vaginal whitening refers to the use of creams, peels, or laser treatments aimed at lightening the darkened skin in and around the genital area. Although it is called vaginal whitening, no procedures are performed on the vaginal canal itself. Vaginal whitening is also known as genital area whitening or intimate area whitening.

How is Vaginal Whitening Done?

Vaginal whitening, one of the non-surgical aesthetic procedures, is a quick, painless, and practical process. While there are various types, the primary goal is to eliminate melanin cells. By removing melanin pigments, the genital area becomes lighter and looks younger. When laser is used in vaginal whitening, it destroys the cells located in the dermis layer.

Vaginal Whitening Methods

Vaginal whitening can be performed using multiple techniques, each with its own advantages and effects. The techniques used in vaginal whitening include:

Laser Treatment

Laser treatment helps eliminate melanin cells in the genital area. During the procedure, local anesthesia is applied to the area first. Then, laser beams are used to destroy the melanin cells responsible for darkening. The removal of melanin cells results in the whitening of the area.

Chemical Peeling

Chemical peeling for vaginal whitening requires ongoing treatment. The peeling process is performed in a doctor's clinic and lasts about 30 minutes. After the session, creams that need to be used by the patient are prescribed. The use of these creams typically lasts about a month, gradually lightening the skin tone.

Topical Creams

Topical creams are less preferred compared to other methods. These creams are available on the market and can be used by individuals on their own.

Post-Vaginal Whitening Care

If laser treatment is used for vaginal whitening, there are several important post-procedure care guidelines to follow:

  • To ensure quick healing and prevent moisture loss, it is essential to regularly use the creams and lotions prescribed by the doctor.
  • Keep the area clean.
  • Avoid activities that may cause sweating for a few days after the procedure.
  • Keep the treated area dry at all times.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing after the procedure.
  • Choose cotton underwear after the procedure.
  • Avoid sitting on hard surfaces for long periods.
  • Do not skip follow-up appointments.
  • If any unexpected effects occur after the procedure, consult a doctor immediately.
  • Ensure that the treated area is not exposed to direct sunlight.

If peeling is chosen as the vaginal whitening method, the following care guidelines should be followed:

  • Avoid sexual intercourse while using the creams.
  • Do not swim in the sea, use the sauna, or enter pools for 6 weeks after the procedure.

Risks of Vaginal Whitening

Vaginal whitening procedures do not pose any harm. On the contrary, these procedures can improve skin health. However, some side effects may occur after laser treatment. These side effects may include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Stinging
